Mediterranean Garden in Dalmatia

Mediterranean Garden in Dalmatia

The plans for this coastal garden focused on the challenge of finding native plants that created a link between an olive grove and the coastline.

I found the Dalmatian iris, also known as sweet iris (Iris pallida ssp. pseudopallida), Dalmatian sage (Salvia officinalis ssp. major), Dalmatian pellitory (Tanacetum cinerariifolium), but also plant species which, alongside the olive trees, have been cultivated throughout the Mediterranean since ancient times: common fig (Ficus carica), pomegranate (Punica granatum), quince (Cydonia oblonga), holm oak (Quercus ilex). Beyond this, I wanted a design that integrated the house, whose grey tones had blended into the olive grove as if in mimicry, disappearing from view in its camouflage. Only inside does the house surprise you with its yellowy orange interior, like a scallop.

The gnarled posts of the pergola wrapped in grapevines (Vitis vinifera ssp.vinifera) create a shady path leading to the coast. Hedges of rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) added to the dry stone walls form the boundary.
